MIT East Campus Urban Design Study

Boston/Cambridge/Somerville

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has initiated an urban design study to formulate a long‐term real estate development framework and a gateway for the East Campus Sector of MIT in Cambridge, with a focus on the arrival at Kendall Square as well as the connections between Kendall Square and the MIT campus. Ken Greenberg is part of team led by Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects with Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates Landscape Architects to undertake this work. A major component of this study is the facilitating structured stakeholder participation involving both the MIT community and the greater Cambridge community. The goal is to transform this area currently largely covered by surface parking lots into a compelling, welcoming, animated, stimulating eastern edge to the MIT campus integrated with the city that surrounds it while accommodating future academic, commercial, and residential growth.
